That exact same thing happened to me some years ago with an Allis-Chalmers CA. I was clearing some brush and undergrowth one day and though I saw sparks a couple times from the corner of my eye. But I didn't hear any scraping or other noise. Put it in reverse and when I pushed in the clutch to stop, it let go. Backed me into some pretty heavy underbrush before I could get it shut off. I tried to get it into neutral but the stick wouldn't move.
