I'd go with an original muffler, the neighbor's M always had a very soft mellow sound even when it was working hard. You might also gain a little low end torque with it compared to a straight pipe. I had Flowmaster mufflers on a '87 Firebird, they were not very quiet at all, just there to make it legal. If you are really concerned about power, would a 450 or 400 muffler have less restriction and still fit on your M? It probably depends on how heavily modified the engine is your M (cam, stroke, bigger valves, etc).
