strange Farmall Ms

Have 3 Farmall M questions. Most of my Ms have a small x stamped on the serial number plate after the serial number anybody know why? A neighbor has a MD that the plate where the lower front bolster bolts on is smaller and only fits an H lower bolster. The upper bolster shaft for an H is too short to fit in the M housing. The upper shaft is like an H only too long to fit an H.
Also it has one long and one short rear axle. Any ideas? Lastly a friend has a M that his dad bought new in 1952 and has the correct serial number for a 52.
It appears to be no different than any other M but on the tag where it is supposed to read Model M it reads Model IX6
He says that it is the original tag but always wondered why it reads IX6? Anybody have any help?
