I would check the valve clearances . Should be .017 hot . My tractor would start and idle and run (I thought )well , till it warmed up . Then It would run rough and backfire . I pulled a plug wire off at a time to check for rpm drop . Ther was a noticable rpm change in all cylinders but not in no two . A rpm drop tells you your getting power . No drop and that clyinder is dead . Then removed the valve cover , and found a broken push rod . Got a new push rod and figured I better make sure the intake valve will open , was so lucky I didnt crank , becuase that valve had been stuck for a long long time . The head was taken in and rebuilt . It was very worn . The compression was showing in number two clyinder , but was a little low . The spark plug at a time trick will reveal a lot . Please post what you come up with A lean fuel mixture is a sign of back fire. Also if the timeing is to far advanced will back fire . Did you time static at tdc ? Gas in oil pan may be the valve issue or blow by from worn piston / rings .
