I always do it by eye because you can get it closer than you do with a lineup tool. Started doing it years ago on early '50's Chevys. If you line up the splines before you go together they will fall in place. Put the line between a tooth and groove at the vertical and do the opposite on the transmission. It is much better than pushing them close and then turning the PTO to try to find alignment.
