Kevin & Burrhead- My gut tells me Kevin is best off to leave sleeping dogs lie. All the messing around no doubt spilled/leaked some of the highly corrosive calcium chloride solution around the valve stem hole in the rim.

If Kevin want's to do it right, then pull the tires and tubes off the rims. Give the rims an agressive hot soapy water wash and hot water rinse. Sand blast the corroded spots on the rims and give 'em a good coat of paint.

With the valve cores out do a careful fold and squeeze the inner tubes, valve stem at lowest point in the activity, to get as much of the solution out as possible. Next, inflate the tubes and give 'em a good hot soapy water wash and rinse, then hang up to air dry.

After that, more hot soapy water and scrub, scrub, scrub the inside of the tires. Again, lots of hot water rinse and allow to fully air dry after wiping out the rinse water you couldn't dump out.

Burrhead, keep in mind that up here the tires are filled with a strong CaCl solution. It prevents freeze up in cold weather and adds a lot of weight to the solution.

My gut tells me that this late in life it would be wise to not even mess with it. Next time he has a flat, or some tire problems, he'll be presented with a wonderful opportunity. He will be able to install brand new rims, brand new tubes and brand new tires, and at the same time forbid the presence of CaCl anyplace near the work area. That set up will probabably last him another 25 years easy.

It seems like once CaCl gets on metal there ain't no stopping the corrosion. You can slow it down, but the stuff seems to just keep eating away at the metal.

You towns folks can get some good out of this info, if you keep in mind that "road salt" used during winter, often contains at least some CaCl.

No grins on this, IHank

Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
