In my state at least all the write ins must be counted an tabulated. We have automated voting machines but all the write ins have to be manually counted and tabulated, my wife is a poll worker and the write in tabulations add at least an hour to their day they usually are there from 6 AM until at least 8 PM. This year they have new rule that write ins for Daffy Duck, Snuffy Smith, Adolf Hitler (maybe) etc. do not have to be counted.
