I did some rather extensive comparisons with valve adjusting procedures. Main reason for the chart is flat rate, quicker they claim. Some engines , when you adjust by the chart, then go over then again following mate cyl firing orders you will see some slight differences. Depends on the ramp on the cam lobe. A lot of high performance cams recommend adjusting only on the exact heel of the cam lobe by turning engine one full turn from wide open valve. If you adjust following firing order you will have all cylinder adjusted to same clearance, other method, you will have some slightly looser and some slightly tighter, particularily on a 6 cyl engine. And, of course, you don't need the book.
