There are three places to check: THe first is the worm bearings on the steering wheel shaft. (in the gear box) Turning the wheel left and right, watch the shaft as it enters the box, (marking it with a permanent marker where it comes out of the box when turned one way all the way helps) then turn it to take up the play. The shaft should not move in and out of the box at all.
The second is the connection under the front that moves the steering arm. It is either a square tapered connection, or a woodruff Key on a taper. The nut comes loose and the arm wears out allowing much play.
The third is tie rod ends spindle arm connections, and spindle bearings.
The first is fixed by replacing the bearings and seal The second is easiest if it is square and has enough substance to it to tighten (possibly making a square shim to allow it to be pushed farther up the taper. If it is woodruff Key, a larger Key can be installed. Use a Dremel tool to carefully reconstruct a new Key socket and key way. Time consuming, but works.
Replacing tie rod ends is just that.
Spindle bearings and spindle arm repair are pretty easy, Remove the spindle and drive out the old bushings (or use a slide hammer)
New bushings, and/or welding up and turning down the spindles where worn will do it.
