The reverse idler gear slides when shifting into reverse. As I recall, that engages it with the gear on the lower (output) shaft and it is always meshed with the upper gear. The only other gear that is meshed in neutral is the oil slinger gear, which is the rearmost gear on the lower shaft. In neutral, the lower shaft does not move and the oil slinger is running on a bushing.
Since the oil slinger is die cast, it is soft and easily picks up chips that can cause a tick. Any noise in neutral is likely to be from the oil slinger. Other posibilities are the reverse idler or a bearing on the top shaft. They are all that is moving in neutral.
Don't know what the loud crack was. May have been the oil slinger destroying itself. Could have been caused by ice.
