I read from lots of posts here that T/A s last a long time if used right. There must be a lot tht aren't as you see quite a few posts where TA is bad, mostly on low side. I think part of it is keeping it adjsted. It is a serious enough problem that most tractor adds you see for the earlier ta equiped tractors say " TA good" or "TA bad". When I first bought my SMTA the TA was out on the low side. I used it that way for about a year before I had to go into the PTO seasonal disconnect so had it split once. I debated on fixing it then and decided I would. I am glad I did as It is a really useful option especially on tillage or on PTO equipment. Mine was not that expensive to fix, bought a rebuild ramp and roller setup, carrier it ran on was ok and ta clutch was good, a few seals and gaskets and it was done, I did the work on it though. You can also get a TA eliminator setup but it cost about as much as repairing the TA.
