If the 340 steering is anything like the tractor that replaced it, the 504, then IH should be rebuked for continuing the design. The 504 steering has four U-joints and one is very high angle. There were two power steering options. One put a Charlynn underneath the steering wheel and did not solve the problem. The other option was a fully hydrostatic system which should have been better and probably was. I doubt if that option was avalable on the 340 but I don't have a parts book and can't confirm. I solved the steering problem on my 504 by installing the Charlynn at the bolster. That eliminates the high torque on the U-joints.
