Frank, The answer is YES and NO. I havent bothered to change to 12 volt starters (nor had them rewound) when I converted from 6 to 12 volts and never really had any problems but its still best to avoid longggggggg periods of cranking. The NO part is it can be a lil tough (on some tractor starter combinations) on the starter drive mechanism (the Bendix) due the the much higher kick in torque when you put 12 volts on a 6 volt starter. Thats why on 6 to 12 volt conversions and unlike my usualy "bigger is better" battery advice, I dont necessarly recommend a super heavy duty high CCA 12 volt battery on a 6 to 12 conversion. John T
