My 400 (the same 264 cid engine) used to pop like that more when I used a wide spark plug gap of .030. Now that I run .025 it seems a little better. Another thing to check is to make sure you are getting full spark advance range. If you are not getting 0 degrees TDC at idle and 25 degrees at full throttle your distributor advance weights are sticking and will have to be lubricated or replaced. I ended up replacing mine because the springs were so weak. Sure makes it run smoother.
