H, 45, Mag, Modified, no spark

Previous owner removed kill terminal cover and wired an external automotive coil onto the kill terminal. I supose this was to use the mag as a point to make the tractor run. ANyway, no spark, and I have 12v at the coil. Does this method work? Should I expect to rebuild the mag? ANyone done this, seen it done? ABW
