You've definetly got a tooth knocked off the reverse driven gear, caused by someone dropping it in to park while it was still moving. You can either remove the reverse idler cover from the left side, or remove the range trans cover/shift deck underneath the platform to inspect it. It is the rearmost gear on the top shaft. It is a big job to replace it, but it is pretty easy. If you can handle a JD Syncro-Range, you can definetly handle a 706. You will need a few special tools.
