It may only be a problem with the shifter forks. If, for example, the shift lever has gotten back to the neutral slot without pulling the fifth gear slider off the end of the main shaft it could let you put it in R,1,2,or3 and be in two gears (locked) while being in 5th when it feels like neutral. Or it could be worse, but probably isn't. For starters, take the shift lever off and see can you move the shifters with the usual big screwdriver. If that doesn't make it obvious what's wrong, it's not too hard to take the cover off to see what's going on inside. Even I did it. The service manual, I&T or IH, gives good instructions. Look at how I tied the steering post and gas tank out of the way. The wheel and axle being off was another part of the job.
