Hey George, I am considering buying an IH 354 from a friend and after a search for such on ytmag forum your name comes up in a lot of posts. You seem to know a lot about these tractors. I must first say that my friend (who currently owns the tractor) and I aren't 100% certain this tractor is a 354. All decals are faded so the model number is not legible. He has owned the tractor for 10-12 years and I used to run it for him using a 9' sickle mower. I mowed hay with it for him for 4 summers and I fell in love with the tractor. I told him I wanted first shot at buying it if he ever sold it and he called me recently. He's ready to get rid of it. I haven't seen or run it in about 4 years so I'm going to look at it again this weekend. Can you tell me exactly what #'s I should get off of if to tell for sure exactly what model IH tractor this is? I can also take a digital pic it this would help. It has power steering, dual clutch, 3 pt., glow plugs, diff. lock, 4 speed main, 2 ranges and is a diesel. This is one stout old tractor. Tires are fair at best, paint is bad. Recently someone was mowing with it, it started smoking due to a wire shorting out and instead of unhooking the battery the fellow let it fry every wire on it. So he rewired it and spray painted it. I haven't seen how bad it looks but I will this weekend. I do know it's mechanically sound. We put new glow plugs and both the lift and steering hydraulic pumps about 4-5 years ago. The tach doesn't work nor does the fuel gage. It's just a well used but still strong farm tractor. I could mow with it hard all day in the Texas heat and it wouldn't use hardly any oil (maybe 1/2 quart or sometimes none). It always held terrific oil pressure and ran cool no matter how hot it was outside. What all do you know about the 354 to tell me to look for to distinguish it from other model or will the numbers off some tag be enough to tell? If it is a 354, are they good tractors? What weaknesses did they have? I appreciate any response because you must know your stuff and I like learning all I can about a piece of equipment before buying. What (roughly) is this tractor worth? I must say, I used this 354(?) beside this friend who used a Ford 3600, both pulling 9' sickle mowers and I like the 354 much better. Only thing better on the 3600 was the steering. The 354's steering was too hard, it almost seemed like 1/2 power 1/2 manual. Maybe because the steering cylinder needs to be rebuilt (it was leaking slightly)? Anyway, I have seen posts saying this 354 only has around 25 PTO hp? Is this true? If so, it's the strongest 25 PTO hp I've ever seen. It would work right beside that 3600 Ford all day long and I thought it was around 40hp? I'll let you go but make any comments/suggestions to help me out. I want to learn all I can. Thanks.

Today's Featured Article - The 8N and the Fox - by Zane Sherman. Dec. 13 1998, Renfroe, Alabama. Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
