The starter armature shaft could be dragging on the pole shoes because of worn bushings at either end of the starter. With all parts clean and the shaft lightly lubricated with a high temp grease, reassemble and try to start the engine again. I have had best luck by grounding the battery on one of the starter mounting bolts. The shortest path for electricity is the best. You might want to look at the starter switch and clean those contact surfaces to assure a good connection. All the starter amperage must pass through that switch so it is a possible weak link in the system.
