TA - High or Low - In or Out?

I have a '62 560G, and typically operate on the "low" side of the TA, only throwing the lever forward when I need additional speed (like upshifting a powershift). It seems from reading other posts I am using it backwords, do other people operate in the high side most of the time, and pull back the lever for more power like when the tractor lugs down in the field. Is the "low" side (lever back) considered as having the TA engaged or disengaged? Am I causing damage by running on the low side continually?
