Diana: This time of year any diesel should be starting without starting fluid. You have some problems with either injectors, injection pump or poor compression. The danger lies in using starting fluid in conjunction with using glow plugs at the same time. I don't know whether that Continental diesel in your 350 even has glow plugs. If it has and they are working don't use them while spraying starting fluid. The glow plug is just what is says, an electrical device that glows red hot in the cylinder of your engine. If ether hits that when your are supplying power to it you could have serious trouble. I have never heard of it blowing the head off an engine, although I wouldn't argue with anyone who said so. I have seen it bend connecting rods.
