It was not uncommon for IH diesels of that era to have head problems. The third valve used for running on gas made for thin walls between the valves which made them susceptible to cracking. A replacement head will cost a few hundred dollars, but they're a great tractor for restoration or general use. There's nothing like switching from the purr of gasoline to the bark of diesel on a quiet summer morning. One note - I was taught to switch back to gasoline for a couple minutes before shutting down. This reduces chamber temperature and helps minimize the chances of cracking the head.
