Your sequence is correct except that I believe only the earlier ones used the lever forward for diesel and back for gas. I had a 1950 MD and that was gas ahead and diesel back. I think the SMTA diesels were the same. One very important thing is to warm them up good and cool them down good. I always let my MD cool down for several minutes on diesel, then switch to gas for a few minutes. If your diesel throttle is shut off properly you can just pull the gas/diesel lever back and the engine will stop with the starting valves closed.
