Mike - The pulley will have to come off to remove the front cover. I'm not sure you'll gain much though by removing it if all you are doing is trying to clean up the engine. Its pretty straight forward and you may not even need a puller..I didn't. Just make sure you note everything as you take it off..have heard of guys who button everything up only to discover they left an oil slinger out or some other obscure part. A parts manual is very helpful in showing the way everything fits together. The valve cover and oil pan come off easily enough and cleaning up under them is easy. Not sure why the water jacket uses those studs but thats the way they came from the factory so I restored mine that way. Good luck.
