I have recently changed the battery in my 1951 IH "M" to 8 volt. When it would get warmed up after running a while the 6 volt just would barely turn it over. The engine has only 80 hours on it since rebuild and I assume tighter clearances after the engine heats up makes the starter work harder. I purchased an 8 volt battery from Tractor Supply Co. store and installed it. whatever model farmall you install an 8 volt into, you must adjust the voltage regulator to allow the generator to put out at least 9 volts. Most delco regulators
are two contact type. One set is for voltage adjustment. It has a spring on the side of the contact and a phillips head adjustment screw. By turning the adjustment screw clockwise it will increase the generator output. You must hookup a volt meter to the battery, start the engine, warm it up and then open the throttle wide open. Slowly adjust the regulator screw until you read 9.0 to 9.5 volts. Be careful with your screw driver, ideally insulate it by wrapping it with plastic tape to keep from accidently from shorting out the contacts. Also be very careful in removing the regulator cover, keep dirt out of the contacts and reinstall the same way it came off.
Light bulbs can be a problem if you run lights often..the 6 v bulbs don't like 8 volts for long duration. I use my "M" for pulling, so it isn't a daily or weekly work tractor. Some guys I know that have a "C" have run it for years with an 8 volt battery with no problems. Hope this helps...

Today's Featured Article - The 8N and the Fox - by Zane Sherman. Dec. 13 1998, Renfroe, Alabama. Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
