I grew up on a farm on the East Coast of Canada, Nova Scotia to be exact. My grandfather was an importer of wild western horses. He had a nephew in southern Sask. a farmer who rounded up wild horses for horse power on farms and logging operations in the east. Our farm had about 20 horse stalls. Stortly after WW#2 they could see hand writing on wall, this business was over. My dad was establishing a dairy herd on farm. The last railcar load of horses arrived in spring of 1950 and the last horse left our farm in May of 1951. They had, a tractor since 1938, a Fordson then in 42 a new W4. I always thought my dad would keep a horse or two. He didn't out they went, tractor equipment and a second tractor was purchased to mow, cultivate, etc. My dad would go to county fairs and any number of events were horses were featured, he loved horses. There was never another horse on that farm. Kind of makes me wonder why I have 3 old tractors to play with.
