All the lead additive did was artificially raise the octane rating to make low octane gas burn more like higher-octane gas. Back in the 40's, most gasoline was around 50 octane, so the lead was added to make it burn like it was 70 octane (and less prone to knock). Today's unleaded is 87 or better, so even without the lead substitute you are free and clear of any knocking issues. If you do have knocking, it will be a timing problem. Today's gas should burn cleaner as well, so I doubt your plugs will show any damage or deposits (assuming they are the correct heat range and length). As noted below, valve seat wear is the biggest issue, and that is very slow. Loss of compression due to valve wear will be the first symptom, but that will be more than 20 years from now if you use it for light duty as the others have already said. If you have made modifications (shaved head, extra high-compression pistons, etc.) then there may be others issues you have to worry about, but valve wear won't be one of them (not soon, anyway). Hope that helps, Dave
