It's not that bad a job, Bob, if you're set up to split the tractor. You might be able to get the bolts off that joint to split between the torque tube and the tranny so that you can roll the rear end back, but it's doubtful. The space to turn a wrench through there is more than tight and the bolts are even tighter. In the long run it will probably be easier to split behind the engine and then take the torque tube off. Sounds worse than it is. There are four bolts, two facing forward, two aft, on the joint between the shaft and tranny. Once that joint's open, there's a bolt through the tranny side of the joint with a washer beneath. After that a two-point puller will pull it in good order. Then it's just a matter of taking off the collar and replacing the seal. If the gasket on the lower cover is seeping, well, no time like the present. The seal and the gaskets (one behind the collar around the shaft, the other around the lower cover)are still CaseIH parts. If your local dealer can't get them, Carter and Gruenwald has them. Most important part in splitting is the safety, supporting things so they don't fall on you. The A is not too bad, better than a B, anyway, for balance. I've read threads about running a stout bar through the cultivator mounts and supporting each end of the bar on a jack stand. Hope this is not too much detail, but still enough. Email is above if I can help more. Good luck! ScottyNY

Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
