Martin, Red is on the nose as usual, about the tube running from the head to the air breather intake. As to the second question, I think I know where you're at. You have removed the panel with the crankcase breather tube from behind the oil filter/distributor.?.? Did you have the original crimped copper filter still in place? I had nothing in mine and replaced it with some fiber material from a Ford crankcase breather element. An old farmer down the street told me to use steelwool but my Case/IH dealer mechanic advised me against this. As to blowing out the dirt with compressed air, I don't think I would. I wouldn't think you should have had dirt in there at all, although I suppose if there were no filter in place it may be possible. More likely you have a build up of sludge and grime from the engine. After I bought my H I cleaned it by first removing the oil pan and valve cover (lots of sludge here too) and mixed up about a 50/50 solution of Marvelous Mystery Oil and Kerosene. Took an old tooth brush and starting with the rocker arm assembly scrubbed everything I could see, working my way down to the side panel and exposed lifter rods and finally down to the exposed crank & bearings into the oil pan (don't forget the oil filter screen). Cleaned and rinsed everything with liberal amounts of the MMO&kero soultion. Put on new gaskets. Then I put in 6 quarts of new 10W-30 ran it for 30 minutes or so until it was hot and changed the oil again (although this may have been unnecessary). I got all kinds of gunk out and the few times I've been back inside, the areas I cleaned showed no additional buildup.
