The others have given you an idea as to what to call the shaft. To change the seal you'll have to remove the shaft as outlined below and then the round shaft with the digs in it coming out of the transmission has to be screwed off, I used a brass punch and a big hammer to loosen and tighten mine. then you can remove the three bolts that hold the plate in place, Make sure you have a drain pan under it as the gear oil will run out. If you have a original seal the new seal will be thinner, I put 2 in my tractor, one to seal the oil in and one reversed to keep dirt and moisture out. Then I just used a light film of silicon to reseal the gasket on the seal plate gasket.
