Farmall MD Starting Problems

I finished rebuilding a 1951 MD about a year ago. It started fine the first couple of times. It popped right off on gas. For a long time though I have had problems getting it going on gas. I have to crank it over a lot with the starter. It will sputter a couple of times before it finally gets going on gas. Once running on gas it switches over to diesel easily. Any help will be much appreciated. Karl
