Paint thinner in the tank?

I popped the top of a gas tank of a '40 All-Fuel H I was examining at auction. The tank was empty save for a bit of moisture on the bottom, and it smelled like paint thinner. I thought it was distilate, because I actually have never smelled distilate. Maybe kerosene? Because I can't remember the last time I remembered smelling that. But someone said it was just old gas. That's how it smells. True?
