Hope for your sake it's "ring dust," since the other considerations cause me too much pain to mention. You know, it's odd that we hone the cylinder walls or sleeve walls to accelerate wear for the breaking in process, don't you think? There has to be a form of "Zen" in that whole idea. Also, I know that after piston aircraft engine rebuilds, we would have our mechanic collect a sample of oil for analysis. They'd dissolve it in acid and run spectrography on the solute and print out a metalurgical analysis. The whole idea was that we "wanted" it to be ring dust. They could determine if the unwanted components of, say - the crankshaft, or main or engine bearings, or cam lobes, were present. Well, I think for the Dang Ole H (pardon, the now un-Danged Ole H) - you just gotta hope and look for relative decline in amounts of dust. RKS
