The key here is alignment, alignment, and alignment. The gap between the engine and trans housing should be equal all the way around as you bring the two halves together. Eyeball it carefully, measure it, get it as equal as you can. Move and jack it as needed. Use longer bolts in the attachment area to guide you. Turn the pto shaft or engine to help line up the splines between engine and clutch disc. With the two halves lined up as close as you can, tighten them some as you turn the engine/tranny. I've had to tighten some quite a bit before they popped. It is part of the skill of a mechanic to know how much to tighten before you hurt the clutch disc. If it just won't go, you might have to roll the halves apart and examine. You need to check clutch disc spline to tranny input shaft before you assemble. Same check for pilot bearing to tranny input shaft--sometimes one gets sold the wrong parts. These are the two things that have to go together, along with an ipto shaft, if so equipped.
