Make sure the magneto itself is properly timed. With the #1 cylinder at top dead center of the compression stroke, make sure the rotor of the mag is pointing to the post for the #1 plug wire. If the rotor points to the #4 wire, your mag needs to be taken off and the drive rotated 1/2 turn then put back on. If the rotor is pointing somewhere other than #1 or #4, the gearing in the mag is off. You might want to click on "Search This Site" on the left hand side of this page and perform a search for 'magneto timing' in the Farmall discussion forum. Once you have established that the mag itself is OK you can time it to the engine by again putting the rotor toward #1 plug wire. Loosen the mag clamp bolts and turn the magneto until the coil cover lays all the way toward the block (counterclockwise) and lightly tighten it down. Turn the engine two complete revolutions and stop at the top dead center mark again. Loosen the mag clamp bolts and slowly rotate the mag toward yourself until the impulse trips (loud click). Tighten the mag at the place where it tripped and you are in time according to the manual. Post back and let us know what you find.

Elliott said while this
