12 volt conv. Alternator fit?

I recently purchased a new alternator for my H model from an online source that I thought would fit with no problem. I made a shiny new bracket for my shiny new alternator. The only problem is that the fit is to tight under the hood. The new alt. rests against the valve pan and also rubs against the hood at the same time leaving no room for adjustment of the belt. I could probably buy a belt that would work until it streched to far then buy another but I am worried that I will rub a hole into my valve pan and hood. A piece of rubber may solve this but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or knows of anyone who has done the conversion and if they have encountered the same problems. Or any ideas on another alt that may be a bit smaller. Thank you
