The Dzus fastener is still widely used especially on aircraft. The stud fasteners counterpart are typically a receptacle or spring, either one riveted to the backing sheetmetal with 2 ea 3/32 countersunk rivets. The Farmalls used the spring type. Commonly, the stud or spring fails from over torqueing. The drawback with this stud fastener is that it tends to chaf into the sheetmetal itself, removing paint and gouging into the sheetmetal over time. Sounds to me like you have damaged/missing springs and or studs. Take a closer look behind the stud holes backing sheetmetal and see if there is a spring riveted across the hole. Otis
