Points: mark the position of your current distributor (timing) setting on the distributor bracket. Rotate the distributor until the points open up and set their gap. Rotate the distributor back to your mark (you'll have to reset the timing anyway since you changed the points, but the mark should get you close enough to get the engine started OK). Starter: before doing anything very involved with the starter, look over ALL the electrical connections for corrosion, tightness, etc. About 90% of the time that's where the problem is for the symptom you're describing.
