The launched dipstick indicates a large amount of pressure entering the crankcase area in a very short period of time. The failure of the valve cover gasket indicates the same thing. A few things could cause this. Worn rings can leave cylinder pressure through into the crankcase, but I would doubt that they could pass that kind of pressure through in such a short time. A major piston failure (hole) could result in this type of pressure. If it is a turbo-equipped model, the turbo could also be responsible. I would be very careful of doing any rotating until I got in and took a look at things. Probably the easiest way would be to drop the pan and look up into the cylinders from the bottom. Someone else might be more able to assist you with any problems with the turbo if so equipped. Good luck.
