The detents in the transmission hold/snap in to the in the individual gear selections pretty hard. As a result worn out, or out of adjustment, linkage will definately create problems with shifting. If you can't get the linkage to work, the easiest way to test the transmission is to pull the floor plates so you can get to the shift levers on top of the transmission. Disconnect the linkage and move the levers by hand and insure they snap into the detent for each gear, and, of course, run the machine in each gear to insure that the shifting linkage is the only problem.
