I would not go with a steel core. Many years ago I was talked into buying a steel core for my D4. It started cooling system problems that continue to this day. I replaced it with a nice brass core out of a 5T D4 but the fan took out that one. Now I have a core out of an RD 4 in it. It cools well. You can"t buy a new core like Cat used any more at any price. Your Cat is newer but I would try to find a used one and have it cleaned and checked at a radiator shop. There are guys at ACMOC that have been getting cores for a somewhat reasonable price but they are not as good as the original.
