If I remember it takes about 100 to bring down a big animal. They are attracted to the flowers of alfalfa and swarm in groups.I have them here, the orange ad black ones and the purple and black ones. They get into the house sometimes.Watch your flakes as you feed if you think you might have them.

We had some of these in our 3rd cutting alfalfa too which was baled about 2 weeks ago. Problem is supposed to be worse if you use a mower conditioner. From the research my wife did it sounds like it takes a lot of them to cause problems. We went ahead and baled and have been feeding to our horses with no problems.

One itzy bitzy piece of beetle will kill a horse. It's best to not condition Alfalfa and squash the little buggers. Tx Jim

From this webpage at UK they state as few as 25 beetles can kill a small horse.

One itsy bitsy piece? There should be no horses alive in the U.S. of A. Or at least a very high mortality rate. Those things are not only in alfalfa.

Bob,I've never fed Alfalfa hay but my brother has fed a lot to his AQHA show horses and his Vet said that it only took a small piece of blister beetle or the mashed remains to kill a horse. Maybe the beetles in Texas are stronger than the ones in Minn. I stand corrected!!!!! !!! Tx Jim
