cut the rye after jointing, first sign of hollow stem. Bernie, a couple of people near me do some combining. I'm on the north shore.

I'm in north/central near Quabbin Resivoir (sp). There's probably some in the CT valley but they're too big to haul any distance, especially for only a few acres. I didn't think there were any fields left that close to Boston.

If you wanted to have some done, You might find someone in the IHC club who wants to play with his toy. They have a plow day every year out to Hunt's place in Orange. The guys near me like to do up some for seed and as a salt marsh hay replacement.

I raised rye for straw for about 5 years, only ever planted it once, the first time. Combining isn't done in my area. I mowed it when the seeds hardened, tedded the hang out of it to knock the grain off, and disked it as soon as the bales were picked up. Every year the stand was thicker. I stopped because I was getting too many weeds and the market price dropped. I was getting $4 a bale wholesale.

Just cut it at the same time you would combine it, I did it for several years like that and it worked great.

did you just let the seeds fall on the ground then or were you rolling it into large rounds to try feed cows. I always combine it first then bale

I just let the seeds fall on the ground or stay on the stalk. I was putting it into small squares and selling as construction straw. And yes you will get volunteer rye coming up. People I know that did it for cows were usually chopping it green.

Didn't you lose alot of value doing it that way just wasting the seed.i have always combined it,then baled it and still do for the retail market, both seed and straw
