It is so good to see everyone active on this site again, you can sure tell it is spring time. The question I have is when they say that"barley is in the boot" what exactly does that mean? I thought I must be pretty dumb, but after I ask a half dozen farmers around here I found out they didn't know either. So I told them that I had a vast source of farming knowledge and that I would find out. So there it is guys.I need to know, thanks a million!

the head forms and partially-to-fully-flowers while still enclosed in a kind of sheath formed by the top leaf - that's the "boot", I guess so name because it sort of looks like the top part of a pull-on boot. Then it emerges from the boot to ripen out as the head of seeds that get harvested.
