A friend said he wanted to grow sunflowers for bird seed or whatever.I recently purchased an IH 303 combine with a 10ft grain head w/hume reel to cut my 30 acres of oats so I told him I'd try them with it. Thinking a few short rows would be something unique to do and if it didn't work we'd cut them by hand..... ..... He planted over 3 acres!!!!! !!!!! I don't know the first thing about sunflowers. All the nieghbors say how pretty the field looks. All I can think of is what am I in for later on this fall.I am waiting for the manuel for this machine and I hope it has the proper settings For sunflowers. Will this combine work in sunflowers? Will this header work? When do you harvest? Do they need to be run thru a dryer? Thanks for any help AJ

some 15 years ago my granddad and dad planted about 200 acres of sunflowers then havested them with a ihc 101 with a special built header.nothing more than a 13'grain table with corn snouts.but the machine itself was set the same way as for corn.with cylinder filler bars and a slow speed and i believe the bottom sieve was close to if not all the way closed to keep from blowing them over since the seeds are very light.as for the 303 it's preety much the same machine just a little bigger with some updates but there both good machines if ran and adjusted right.good luck .jon kraut

They used the row crop bean heads built by Deere 653 and 653A

They grew sunflowers for a few years here in southern Minnesota. They were very hard to dry down 'here', had to spray them to kill them, let them dry. Then the seeds want to fall out when the reel touches them, so they have something called 'sunflower pans' that attach to the regular platform header to save as many as possible. How or what exactly, I donno.

That's as much as I know, never actually was around a combine harvesting them. My guess would be a very big cyl openning & very, very slow speed, I'd think the combine would do fine but you might have drying/ storage issues, as well as a lot of header losses?

AJ, When I was young a neighbor raised sunflowers for poultry feed, he combined, but I don't remember any details. It would be an interesting question to pose on the combine board. ATW/WA

Hummm, interesting questions. There are "flowers" grown around here, thousands of acres. i think they use a special row crop head but don't know why a platform wouldn't work. just run the platform high and clip the heads off. I'd guess a real slow cylinder speed. If you don't get any replies I could ask around.

oh yeah, filler plates. we use them for corn and take them out for wheat. I'll ask around.
