I have a two acre field with mostly thimothy and a couple of other types of hay plus a lot wild weeds. I would like to rid the field of the hay and use it for other purposes. My first thought is plow and disk. Has anyone out there defeated a hay field with tractor and implements? Any and all advise/comments welcomed. Thank you, Roger

You never said exactly what you plan to do with the ground, once your "hay" is gone. Will it be lawn? Are you turning it into pasture? There are subtle differences as to what I'd do, depending on what your ultimate goal is. For a lawn, I'd spray (round-up), disk, and seed. You can substitute tilling for disking. I would till the ground at least 3 to 4 inches deep. For pasture, just disk several times, and sew the new seed. If you are plannong on some kind of crop, do a total kill spray, then plow, disk, and plant. Remember, this is what I'd do, with the ground I'm used to. You'll be better off, asking someone "local" to you. They will know your conditions better than I.

"If" you don't want to use chemicals on your ground or burn all that great hay that makes "excelent" mulch. And you want to end up with a nice level field with out all the compaction of going over it again and again with a plow and disc. All you have to do is rotavate it!!

You can hire someone in your area to do it, or buy one for your self, and do jobs for others. I've been doing custom rotavateing for many years, and it's the only tool i know of that will do the job right the first time!!! The secret is to find someone who actually knows how to ajust it right for your conditions!!

In the picture the sod field was rotavated one time with a 6' wide rotavator going 3 mph useing a 45hp tractor! Once over and it's ready to plant!! Extreme conditions may take a second pass a few days later.

Robert

Unless you want the hay, get somebody to burn it off with Roundup then leave it for a couple of weeks and then you should either be able to cultivate it 2 or 3 times or might have to disk first or chisel plow, depending how heavy the sod is.

get everything cut - take it off if it is wirtha nything to ya - otherwise just cut it close to the ground and let it dry - most implements will create lumps when u till it up - it will come in big sod lumps - but i have an idea i want to try - if u read the instructions for a reverse tine tiller on how to break sod into a nice garde n they always say just do it real shallow and continue to go deeper - i tried that and it was a good system - SO my idea is to take a device - in my case a springt ooth or a little field cultivator - cut my grass/weeds real short - get them picked up so they don't all plug up in my cultivator - then just go real shallow and do everything and just keep doing it over and over - a little deeper all the time - the nice part of a field cultivator over a disk is it will be leveler when u are done - I plan on doing this late summer then planting a native grass crop or alfalfa or something-----

Last time I moved an old hay field to crops the first crop was no-till corn. The chemicals are strong enough to take out most of the unwanted grasses. Then plowed and disced the ground in the fall.

just run the plough around the outside of the paddock and kill the grass after that get an oily sack then go around the paddock when you have lit the sach but make sure you do enough rounds with the plough to get a decent fire break and you will have a succesful burnoff
