I have an old field that I am trying to reclaim.
I have been reading about disking. My question is, are you talking about plowing and then disking or just disking the sod to get the seed in the ground?

Hey Scott. If you want to totally reclaim your field (depending on your situation), I would definately suggest plowing 1st and then either disc or rototille, then lightly harrow, seed and pack with a cultipacker or the like. By plowing, you are turning the existing saud under, therefore you are starting with fresh dirt. Good luck and have fun.

Most seem to just want to disk, but you can't kill sod with a disk. Plow & then disk is the way to do it, but I'll bet you try just the disk anyhow.

I have been trying to get a field into grass for grazing and hay. It had been a corn field for 10 years. I mowed the stalks with a brush hog, then lightly disc'ed over part of it. I spread seed by hand over it. Then I disc'ed over the part where it hadn't been done yet. Where I disc'ed before spreading the seed, the grass came up thick and fairly weed free. Where I disc'ed right after spreading the seed, it is full of weeds. There is one spot where I just spread seed and then mowed the weeds and corn stalks. That area took the longest for the grass to take. Where I disc'ed first, there are no thistles. Where I disc'ed or mowed after spreading seed, there are thistles. Just my experience, nothing scientific and for the life of me I can't figure out why the difference.

Mainly, the initial disking will help break up the sod that is there. I think I'd run a disk over it first, then plow. Should be easier to plow then.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. Having disked about 5 times so far this year, I finally broke down and sprayed with 24D to get the weeds taken care of. One guy early on told me to plow everything first which I did not do. If doing it again, I would definately plow first to bury and kill all weeds and their seeds. Then disk to prepare seed bed. If you have access to a springtooth, that will help as well.

I am hobby farmer, but would always plow the field and then disk it. Let it sit a few days but not long enough to get dusty then disk several passes at different angles.
