I have a 22 acre field that I will be taking over as soon as the current lesse has their crop off this fall. I was planning on putting a pure stand of timothy into it next spring, however, the current tenant has let the weeds go this year, almost exclusively a foxtail issue (normal in a drought year). My question is do I go ahead with the timothy (and risk no chemical control of the foxtail), or put in more alfalfa? I really wanted to use the timothy to help spread the work load, as it is usually about 2 weeks later here than alfalfa (central Ohio).

Any suggestions are welcomed,

Thanks,
A.Zimmer

I have had nothing but bad luck with foxtail unless it is grazed and in early spring only.....before the tail grows. After that forget it and don't waste your time baling it.

I am acutely aware of the problems of foxtail in hay. That is why I am unsure of putting this field into timothy, I want to have some control of the stuff. I am really torn about this as I simply dont think i have the resources for that much more alflafa, but dont like selling weedy hay either. I will probably end up putting the timothy in...just curious as to what to expect...will the foxtail go out of control or will the heavy spring cover of timothy delay the germination of the foxtail enough that it wont be a problem?

My experience with foxtail is that it predominates. One of the problems is the millions of seeds that it is capable of producing. Just missing a couple of heads leaves enough seeds to sprout several acres.

Only way I got rid of it was plowing. Plow it up and when it reemerges, plow it again and again and again.
