Commedian/satirist Carl Hurley told this one. I like it and wanted to share. It seems two non-farming brothers decided to take advantage of a government program that was paying farmers not to raise hogs. They decided after much deliberation that they could successfully not raise 1000 head. They filled out the necessary paperwork and successfully not raised 1000 head the first year. They were so pleased with the net results that they decided they would expand the business the next year. After much deliberation again they decided they could successfully not raise 2500 head. It seems they got caught and had to reimburse plus pay a fine. Their only conclusion was they tried to expand too quickly. And so it goes!

As a full-time farmer I was never impressed with the humor that some people saw in this or similar stories. TV show 'Dallas' had a similar line about not raising cattle because they got paid better not to. Any REAL farmer would know that that was 'caga de toro'- but it only castigated farmers into being recipients of government money without having to do anything. It's about as funny as the stories about farmers needing to plant two trees next to their mailboxes, so they can always sit in the shade while waiting for their government checks. As dairy farmers for almost 30 years, this entire family worked 24/7/365 to feed you and our 'neighbors'- the same ones who had every weekend off, vs. our average of 'hired' one day off per year; pulled their boats to the lake, tresspassed on our land with their ATVs, hunted on our land with or without permission- and think it is funny to make jokes about people who work harder than they would ever consider. And then you want to move to the country to get away from all the problems of the city, (you bring them with you) but right away you need the roads blacktopped, cannot stand the tractors and combines roaring at 2 AM, or put up with the smell of organic fertilizer. Course, that last one, I can't relate to- because I always paid extra money to have it knifed in to the ground so the neighbor's did not have to put up with the smell. And just in case- it went into the field next to our house as well. Just as my compatriots- I would rather make a living off of the marketplace, but the government has stuck it's nose into our business so much over the last 70 years that we cannot dig a ditch or install a tile to improve our land that we 'own', or improve our livestock operations, etc., without some dipstick telling us how we need to do it. Years ago I was told by an FSA shoe clerk that I cannot make improvements on my land- her motto was- "If God didn't do it, you can't". I've always thought that God was spelled G-O-D, not D-N-R, or F-S-A. And they are on at least their fourth upgraded computer system to generate more paperwork. What has our govenment done- no matter if the Dem's or Rep's are in charge- to slo0w down the conglomerization of farmer's market choices? Nothing. Most any commodity is controlled by 4 players in this entire country. Full-time farmers would gladly control their own destiny without government assistance or intervention. If you want to be a humorist, my best advice is - keep your day job. The people that feed you are not laughing.

Lighten up JMS and enjoy life a little. You are going to stroke out if you're not careful. As a full-time farmer I've put in the same long days that you have and still do. Humor is just humor. We are only insulted when we allow ourself to be. No one can insult us without our permission. I'll also take advantage of any government program related to farming I can. Why not? There are people much less deserving around this country and the world that do. By the way, you don't put any more food on my table than I do yours.

You do need to think about your adience, time of year, and such as well too tho.

Such things can be funny in the right setting, with the proper known variables.

No one knows if you farm, are a lawyer, or what. Typed words, don't know if you are smiling, kidding, or taking a pot shot at rural America.

And so on.

Just something to think on. Seemed like more a slap in the face than anything funny, as presented. Certainly you are free to do so and say anything negative about farmers you wish to, just think on it a bit & consider others as you do?

Then I guess we would never have any joke about anybody at all on here then. Any joke you crack is liable to offend someone.

No - not at all. Just think it was a little mis-placed - you shouldn't wander into a Jewish forum & make a joke about Jewish people - unless you are _well_ known & folks will be in on the joke. In this case, kinda was out of the blue, from a city dweller, hobby farmer, real farmer? Kinda all unknown - just seemed out of place. In other cercomstances, could be funny I agree. No big deal. No harm. Just a little out of place is all.

It's only out of place if you can't handle it. I'd hate to be so sensitive as evidently some are.

Ever seen the comedy duo Williams and Ree, "the Indian and the White Guy"?

The Indian gives the White Guy grief about being a farmer and collecting Govt. checks. Then, the White Guy turn it around with a joke about a farmer, who is also Indian, getting a welfare check AND a Govt. check!

This is particularly funny when you're in the audience at a Native American casino, and the audience is close to half Native American, and everyone is getting along, and enjoying the show.

I wonder how many other ethnic groups could sit down together and have a good laugh like that without a RIOT?

Agreed. Like 'why is a farmer's cap visor rounded? From sticking his head in the mailbox so often looking for the govt check.

Kinda insulting.

You heard about the tractor with no seat or steering wheel? It's for the farmer who's lost his tail and don't know which way to turn.

A few years ago, some local farmers decided to not raise turnip greens and cantalopes..... .they were all row crop farmers; didn't grow "truck patch" crops at all. Two employees of the (then) ASCS and 4 or 5 farmers spent time in Federal Penitentiary; director of ASCS lost his job. What's bad was, (according to rumor)one of the local "big shots" who was politically connected was allowed to repay the $240,000 he had collected and got off scot-free. Another farmer (according to rumor) had receipts for seed and fertlizer for the "claimed" losses. He wasn't charged..... True story.
