Say young feller,

I'm thinkin' it wouldn't hurt to have an old hay rake around to turn some hay if the occasion arises.

What would you pay for a operational #35 IH with almost new teeth?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Allan

I don't really want to mess with your mind (yeah, right!), but since you are a mechanical, innovative fellow- you could copy a machine I made about ten years ago to fluff and dry grain windrows (barley). I had a chunk of rear mount row-crop cultivator frame and hung a 4 belt windrow pickup from a 45 JD combine behind it, powered by a hydraulic motor, so I could vary the speed of the windrow belts. Complicated part was I made it to swivel, so I could throw the windrow right or left, maintaining 14 foot swather width.- so the resulting windrow was spaced the same as when swathed. By adjusting hydraulic valve and ground speed, I could adjust the 'fluff'- ripping the original windrow to aerate it more. Granted, I could have used the hay rake to tip the windrows, but the I would have knocked out grain, and missed all of the fun shop time.

Hi Rick,

Don't have a blessed thing right now and am square in the middle of the gut-wrenching process of buying a farm with quite a bit of seeded hay.

I'll get a swather to drop the silly stuff, but I know I'm gonna run into the circumstance where I'll need to "flop" that windrow from time to time.

I used to have a #15 and it worked really well just to "tip" that windrow over after it was rained on.

There is a #35 coming up on an auction here locally in a few days and I was just wondering what the old heifer might be worth.

Thanks,

Allan

Hi Allan,

A hay rake is kind of like a plow, man just needs one on the place, even if he never uses it :-). As far as an IH 35, I can honestly say I have no earthly idea, never seen one except in pictures. Heres what I can offer though:

around here older rakes are NH, NI, or JD.

The older NH 56 5 bars bring from $500-$900 up teeth or not. 256's bring $900-2000. Others bring proportionally less, depending on condition. Worst I've seen was a 4 bar NI belt drive taken apart, for $35. The JDs of comparable vintages bring about $100-200 less than the NH.

Yes Sir,

That's what I mean. Just as sure as anything, if I don't have an old rake parked out back, drop some hay, then just sure as anything, it will get rained on.

Better to have one just in case.

Thanks,

Allan

Yes, it is very tempermental.

The only time it rains here is if someone in the county has hay down or ya are trying to lay some cement.

Otherwise, all moisture is in the form of hail. :>)
